The Second Battle of Newbury was a battle of the English Civil War fought on 27 October 1644, in Speen. The battle was fought close to the site of the First Battle of Newbury.
The combined armies of Parliament inflicted a tactical defeat on the Royalists, but failed to gain any strategic advantage.
Speen is a village in Newbury. Centred 2 miles (3 km) north west. Speen has a cluster of hamlets the largest of which is Speen village (which is joined with Newbury) and the others Bagnor, Stockcross, Woodspeen and Marsh Benham.
Its other land is an approximately even mixture of woodland and agricultural fields (including cultivated crops, hay for livestock feed and pasture) and varies greatly in elevation.
